Maximian, full name Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus (d. AD 310), Roman Emperor, 286-305, originally a Pannonian soldier, made by Diocletian his colleague in the empire, but was compelled to abdicate when the latter did so voluntarily, and went into retirement. When his son, Maxentius, assumed the imperial title in the following year (306), he returned to Rome and won over Constantine, who married his daughter, Fausta. However, he failed to depose his son, and fled to Gaul. In 307 he led a revolt against Constantine, but was captured at Marseilles, where he committed suicide.
